Micromed’s 4.5-mm-diameter self-tapping cortical screw, made of titanium, enables efficient and precise fixation in cortical bone without the need for separate pre-drilling. It offers high primary stability, excellent biocompatibility, and is ideal for demanding applications in orthopedics and traumatology.
The Ø 4.5 mm self-tapping titanium cortical screw has been specially developed for high-load osteosynthetic applications and enables secure fixation in dense cortical bone whilst optimising the intraoperative workflow. Thanks to its self-tapping tip, there is often no need for separate thread cutting, which reduces operating time and simplifies handling in the operating theatre. The titanium used offers significant advantages over stainless steel screws. Due to its high biocompatibility, titanium is particularly well tolerated and reduces the risk of allergic or inflammatory reactions. Furthermore, titanium has a modulus of elasticity that is closer to that of human bone. This enables a more physiological load distribution and can reduce the risk of stress shielding, thereby positively influencing bone healing. The screw’s self-tapping geometry ensures efficient anchorage in cortical bone and enables controlled force transmission whilst maintaining high primary stability. Particularly in dense bone structures or in time-critical surgical situations, the self-tapping function offers a clear advantage for surgeons and operating theatre staff. With a length range of 12 mm to 115 mm, the Ø 4.5 mm screw covers a wide range of indications and is ideally suited to applications with high mechanical demands.
Typical applications:
Fracture management of long tubular bones (femur, tibia, humerus) Plate osteosynthesis using 4.5 mm systems High-load diaphyseal fractures Revision surgery and complex osteosynthesis Applications with increased biocompatibility requirements
Advantages of the titanium cortical screw (self-tapping):
No separate pre-tapping required → time savings in the operating theatre High biocompatibility and reduced risk of allergic reactions Modulus of elasticity closer to that of bone → reduced stress on the bone Excellent corrosion resistance High primary stability even in dense cortical bone
Comparison of titanium vs. stainless steel: Whilst stainless steel screws offer high strength and cost-effectiveness, titanium provides clear advantages, particularly for sensitive patients and long-term implantations. Its superior tissue compatibility, reduced stiffness compared to stainless steel, and promotion of osseointegration make titanium the preferred choice for demanding clinical indications. Stainless steel screws, on the other hand, remain a tried-and-tested option for standard applications with high mechanical demands. With its self-tapping titanium cortical screws, micromed offers a modern, efficient and reliable solution for everyday surgical practice – developed for maximum safety, precision and efficiency in the operating theatre.
